  %X0F%TBBS System Highlights %X03%
 ͼ

This bulletin explains how TBBS handles some of the more common functions
you're likely to encounter. If you have never used a TBBS system before,
you should capture and print a copy of these instructions.

 Ŀ
  %X0E%Automatic Logon %X03%

This system may be configured to allow automatic logon. If this feature
is enabled, the system will send an ASCII "ENQ" character at the name
prompt after connecting to the system. This is an ASCII Ctrl-E, or
decimal 5; many terminals and communications software can be configured
to respond to this character by sending a logon sequence. (Check the
manual for your terminal or software for details.)

If the system prompts you for your FIRST name and LAST name separately,
you can send your logon information as a single string in the following
format:

%X0E% Firstname;Lastname;;Password%X03%

If the system prompts you for your FULL name, the following format
applies:

%X0E% Firstname Lastname;;Password%X03%

If this system displays your calling location at logon and requests that
you confirm it, you will need to insert your calling location in between
the double-semi-colon, like this:

%X0E% Firstname Lastname;City, State;Password%X03%

 Ŀ
  %X0E%Flow Control %X03%

TBBS always supports XON/XOFF flow control at times when the system is
sending you data. At any time you may transmit an XOFF (by pressing
Ctrl-S) and TBBS will stop sending data temporarily. To reactivate
the data flow, send XON (by pressing Ctrl-Q), and TBBS will resume
sending output to you.

NOTE: XON/XOFF flow control may have a delayed effect when used in
conjunction with certain modems which are buffered for MNP and/or
V.42bis.

 Ŀ
  %X0E%Full Duplex Operation With Hot-Keys %X03%

TBBS operates in a full duplex mode and is always looking for command
input, even when sending output to you. This means that you do not
have to wait for a menu to finish displaying to give your next command.

During message or file output (such as this, when you're reading text
online) the "P" key will halt the display immediately. When you have
paused the display in this manner, press Enter or Return to resume
the display. TBBS will also respond to the "S" key to abort the display
and return to the previous menu or prompt.

Menu commands are always a single character hot-key, and do not require
you to press Enter or Return after pressing the key.

NOTE: Hot-keys on menus, as well as the P to pause and S to stop
function may have a delayed effect when used in conjunction with
certain modems which are buffered for MNP and/or V.42bis.

 Ŀ
  %X0E%Online Help %X03%

TBBS features online help text displays in most areas of the system.
If you get stuck, try pressing the question mark (?) key. If the
system has help available, it will be displayed to you.

 Ŀ
%X0E%Obtaining the Best System Display %X03%

TBBS features extensive support for color and IBM Graphics characters. For
the best system display, you should attempt to enable these features in your
terminal or communications software if possible.

For color (or highlight support on monochrome displays), your terminal
or software must have ANSI X3.64 or VT-100 terminal emulation. Consult the
manual for your terminal or software to determine whether your system has
this capability, and if so, how to enable it.

For IBM Graphics characters generally require an IBM PC or compatible. Some
computers or terminals can emulate these characters too. Supporting these
characters allows you to see boxes, shading characters, and international
characters.

Once these features are enabled in your terminal or software, you must make
certain they are enabled within your user profile on this system so that
TBBS knows to use color and graphics where applicable. Look for a "terminal
configuration" option on this system, or ask the System Operator for
assistance.

At the option of the System Operator, you may also be able to use the Remote
Imaging Protocol, RIP. This provides a graphical user interface to the
bulletin board. Ask the System Operator for details.
